Bucket list location

Arkaba is a private conservancy that stretches over 63,000 acres in the heart of The Flinders Ranges, a stunning mountain range located in South Australia. It’s one of the most iconic and picturesque natural landscapes in Australia.

Both the Arkaba Walk and Homestead centre the experience around the destination where guests learn about ancient geology, see diverse wildlife and learn about our conservation efforts.

Connect with nature

Arkaba’s variety of landscape brings diversity of both habitat and wildlife including Australia’s three largest macropods, over 120 species of birds, reptiles, amphibians and diverse vegetation communities.

Our expert field guides are essential in delivering an immersive wilderness experience through their interpretation and knowledge of the flora, fauna and geology of the Flinders country.

Travelling to arkaba

Arkaba Conservancy is located in South Australia, on the southern edge of Wilpena Pound and the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. Whether guests choose to arrive by air or prefer a scenic drive that includes an authentic red-dirt road experience, there are several ways to reach Arkaba:

On the road – The drive from Adelaide takes 5 hours via Port Augusta or a little longer via the Clare Valley wine region. The scenic route via the Clare Valley is extremely pretty and has some fantastic places to stop along the drive for lunch. The road on both the scenic and direct drive to Arkaba is on sealed tarmac all the way so a 4WD is not necessary, unless preferred. Please ensure you have the drive directions from/to Adelaide printed or downloaded ahead of time as you will be out of range and will get lost without them. Read more here.

  • From Adelaide – allow 4.5 to 5 hours drive (approx. 405 kms)
  • From the Barossa Valley – allow 4 hours drive (approx. 360 kms)
  • From the Clare Valley – allow 3 hours drive (approx. 260 kms)
  • From Port Augusta – allow 1.5 hours drive (approx. 130kms)

In the air – We are approximately 90 minute flight from Adelaide General Aviation Terminal. Our field guide will meet the flight and then transfer you to the Homestead – a journey time of approximately 15 minutes from the airstrip.

Typical seasonality

The Flinders Ranges generally enjoys dry and sunny days. Over summer, the days can be very warm, reaching up to 32°C, with exciting thunderstorms during early evenings. During winter, although the days are cooler they can be clear & beautiful, rapidly cooling down in the late evening and early morning hours to 0°C. The seasons of life in the outback are winter and spring, when the red dirt is transformed into a carpet of green and pockets of wildflowers appear.
